Yoga for sport and wellbeing
Fluidity, energy, depth and stillness.
Useful elements in any sport and for daily life. Fluidity to flow like a river around obstacles, towards the lowest point: remaining humble. Energy for sport, life and love. Deep breaths, deep thoughts and deep awareness can reduce stress and improve wellbeing. And our ability to become still, mentally or physically, despite what goes on around us is perhaps the greatest element we can cultivate so as to truly relax and be present.
I've learnt to develop these elements through my love and enjoyment of the ocean. My yoga teaching reflects this inspiration through flowing movement, wave breathing and water meditations.

Watersports speciality
Yoga offers a complete training system for surfers and swimmers increasing flexibility and strength in the upper body and legs, and cultivating a focussed mind. Breathwork can be particularly useful for improving swimming and paddling techniques.
I also work with scuba and freedivers to help improve their enjoyment and performance in the water with breathing exercises, gentle yoga and partner work. For more information see my OMdiver project.

The meaning of 'ujjayi'
Ujjayi (pronounced oo-jai) means 'victorious breath' in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India. This whispering sound we create in the throat reflects the rush of the sea onto shore, so it's often known as the Ocean Breath.
Through ujjayi breathing we can connect to our ocean within. While our surface may be turbulent one day and smooth the next, deep within there is a place of peace and harmony. To practice yoga, which means to unite mind, body and spirit using the breath, is to find this stillness within.

Ocean inspirations
"Dive deep into that silence. Stop the oscillating mind. Become free from any waves. Look within that silence and you'll enjoy that peace, the music of your soul, that echoing silence, your self"
Swami Vishnu-Devananda
“From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free”
Jacques Cousteau
"Nothing penetrates deeper than the breath or is more persuasive. Immediately you will object that the moving breath is like the waves of the sea"
B.K.S. Iyengar
"And seek not the depths of your knowledge with staff or sounding line. For self is a sea boundless and measureless"
Kahlil Gibran
